You Can Make a Difference

In Loving Memory
Desmon Rowley
10-21-98 to 09-20-10

Did you know that there is no cure for Crohn's and Colitis. Four out of eight medications they have found to help put Crohn's and colitis in remission, have been known to cause cancer.Desmon was one of many Crohn's patients that have been diagnosised with cancer after taking medications to put her in remission for Crohn's.

It is estimated that as many as 1.4 million Americans have IBD -- with that number evenly split between Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Males and females appear to be affected equally. Crohn's disease may occur in people of all ages, but it is primarily a disease of adolescents and young adults, affecting mainly those between 15 and 35. However, Crohn's disease can also occur in people who are 70 or older and in young children as well. In fact, 10 percent of those affected -- or an estimated 140,000 -- are youngsters under the age of 18

Me, my sister, and 4 friends will be running 204 miles at the Ragnar Relay Del Sol race, Feb 25th and 26th, 2011. We will each be running at least 30 miles, some almost 40 miles. We are taking on this challenge for Desmon and McCoy Rowley, and all those who are suffereing with Crohn's Disease or Colitis. We will be raising money for the TeamDcoy foundation. The foundation is dedicated to finding a cure and raising awareness for Chron's and Colitis. A portion of our funds also go to assisting the Immune Compromised Services to insure quality care to children with childhood diseases. Any size pledge is appreciated. Your pledge can make a difference. Please check out our Website www.teamdcoy.com

Del Sol Ultra 2011

Hey TeamDCoy are we ready to kick some butt? So excited for this new challenge. When I first decided to take on this challenge my goal was to just finish, but after watching my sweet niece pass away I decided I am running this for her! That means I will work my butt off and do my absolute best. All my training is for her and all those other patients suffering from Crohn's. Although Leukemia utimately took her life, Crohn's took a tole on her body. She was slowly wasting away before Leukemia. I strongly believe Leukimia was a secondary diagnosis as do many of her physicians. Meaning if there was no Crhon's there would be no Leukimia. I feel I owe it to Des and McCoy to help find a cure for this horrible disease. In honor of my sweet angel in heaven I promise everyday to be the best I can be in every aspect, including my running.

Here are the leg assignments:
Runner 1 - Stephanie 13.8m + 11.4m + 12.3m = 37.5miles
Runner 2 - Sarah 13.0m + 11.8m + 10.4m = 35.2miles
Runner 3 - Nikki 14.1m + 13.1m + 10.4m = 37.6miles
Runner 4 - Shawna 12.7m + 9.0m + 7.1m = 28.8miles
Runner 5 - Marnie 15.7m + 7.7m + 9.0m = 32.4miles
Runner 6 - Sexy Legs Nelson 10.9m + 7.1m + 8.8m = 26.8miles

I thought breaking down each leg might help with training. Hope you guys are as excited as I am to take on this challenge. Remember everyone has their own goals. Everyones best is different. So lets go out and have a BLAST! Live each day as your last! Love to live and live to laugh that's what Desmon taught me.

One more way to help Dez!

I am raising funds for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) as a participant in their Team In Training program and I'm asking you to help by making a donation to my fundraising campaign. I am running 26.2 miles in the Nike Womens Marathon in San Francisco to accomplish my goal of completing a marathon, but more importantly for those who are battling this life threatening disease. I am running in honor of a friend's daughter who is 11 years old. Desmon is currently battling leukemia while fighting Crohn's Disease. She has been receiving treatments for many months and is determined to be a normal healthy young lady. She has a strong and funny spirit and keeps hospital staff on their toes while she is there for weeks/months at a time.

Each donation helps accelerate finding a cure for leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma. More than 823,000 Americans are battling these blood cancers. I am hoping that my participation in Team In Training will help bring them hope and support.

Please use the link in this email to donate online quickly and securely plus learn more about my progress. You will receive a confirmation of your donation by email and I will be notified as soon as you make your donation.

http://pages.teamintraining.org/dm/nikesf10/krutherford

On behalf of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and Desmon, thank you very much for your support. I greatly appreciate your generosity. Together, we can find a cure!

God Bless,
KATRINA RUTHERFORD

P.S. I would appreciate it if you would forward this email to as many people as you can to encourage them to donate as well. Thanks again.

Sad News

Sorry to report that the young man that was hit didn't make it. He passed away yesterday afternoon. The news said he had too much brain damage. My heart breaks...

Monday, March 1, 2010

Hey girlies!! Hope everyone made it home safely. I wanted to make sure you all knew the kid who got hit has survived. Here is a news article about it from the Arizona Republic...

Saturday afternoon, students at Brophy Prep High School file in and out of a campus square, shaken. Inside they hug, write letters and hold a prayer vigil for 18 year old Robby Mayasich. Adria Renke from Brophy says," He's brilliant. He's waiting to get letters from Harvard and Brown. Pre med. Curious learner. Great all around kid."
Robby was running a leg of the Ragnar Relay Series. The company sponsors 24-hour relay races in different regions of the U.S. This one was a two day relay from Prescott to Mesa. According to DPS, Robby was running along the Carefree Highway just north of Peoria at one o'clock Saturday morning. Though he was accompanied by an escort car, Robby was hit by another car on the road and suffered head trauma and several broken bones; Saturday afternoon he was in critical condition. Robby is the son of KPNX Sales Manager Dan Mayasich.Robby's grandfather, John Mayasich, was a member of the US Olympic hockey team in 1960. Friday night, NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams interviewed John for a story on the 1960 team.

!NEW SAFETY POLICY!

Ragnar has changed there reflective vest policy. You now have to have 4 vest at time of check in, instead of 2. So if you have a vest please bring it. I have 2 I am bringing. At night, you can not be out of the vehicle without a vest on. They sound like they are really going to be crackin' down on it this year. So the more vest we have the better. Also we need at least 2 headlamps per vehicle. So if you have one bring it. Thanks guys! Can't wait to see you all!

IS IT TIME YET?!?!?

I am soooo ready for the race! Last night I did my last hard hill workout. I'll do one more long run this weekend and one short run next week. I'm so anxious to win that gold!! :-) Hope you all are just as excited as I am! See you all in one week! Safe travels to all you girls out of town/state.

The Kick-my-@$$ Workout

I did Sarah and Nikki's hill/lifting workout on the treadmill for 4 miles last night! I tried it once before and it killed me so I didn't really do it like they said to do it. Although, I lowered the incline from what the "animals" run at so I could do it-I ran at a 7-8% incline the whole time and lifted in between. I was getting wierd looks from people around me at the gym. They probably thought I was crazy!! (I guess I am for doing this) Towards the end I was pooped, but I pushed myself and felt so strong and accomplished. When my calves were on fire and I couldn't breathe, I thought of Dez's strong spirit and that we WILL be taking the gold for her (and McCoy!) and I kept telling myself that I didn't want Sarah to have to run with me up a hill this time. :-) I'm really proud of myself for running 4 miles up a hill. Still not sure if I could do it continuously and not stop, but hey, I accomplished 4 miles no matter what so I was happy with myself. Thanks Sarah and Nikki for a great workout!! Can't wait to see you all!!

London's 1/2 marathon

Me, Marinda, our friends Amy and Shauna all went and ran in London's Run this past weekend. It was SOOOOO much FUN! London's Run was put together for a little girl who had AML Leukemia like my niece Desmon. We decided to go run it in Desmons honor! It was an emotional run that kept me pushing through the whole race. Marinda decided to do it a week before the race. She hadn't been running at all, because of 3 feet of snow and sick little ones. It was our first 1/2 marathon. She did at a 9:13 pace. I am soooo proud of her. No training and does it under a 9:30 min. pace! WOW! My friend Amy started running for her first time in November. The 1/2 marathon was her first race ever. She did it in a 10:08 min. pace! She is AWESOME! My goal was an 8min pace, and I did it in a 7:50min pace. I am so excited! I thought we all did AWESOME! I'm so proud of us for reaching our goals. We kept Desmon in our minds and heart the whole race and it really kept us pushing! She has endured sooo much and I know if she keep going, we can keep running. So keep training and lets do it for DEZ!
P.S. I resubmitted our team pace, so we should be getting our start times next week. And then we will make some plans.

Thursday, January 28, 2010

I wanted to thank Raquel for getting volunteers together for our race. She told me that she thought of it while running and that she gets most of her good ideas while running so she may not ever get to stop running. Raquel tell Dalton and Steven thanks so much for doing this and Lori let Hannah know that we are so excited she is willing to help. It is coming so fast and I am getting a little wigged out.

It's coming up!!!

Well it's comin' up on us whether we like it or not. I still haven't heard start times yet. Volunteer registration starts Jan. 23rd at 8am. We need three volunteers, so if you know of someone that you think would volunteer please let me know. We want them to be able to pick the best volunteer time. So if you let me know ASAP, I can get on or and register them or they can. Whatever is easier. Thanks guys!! Remember we are running for Dez. So keep training and do your best. If you do your best you've succeeded! Also, we need one more driver for DEL SOL. For van 2. Remember there will be Zhalore, Erika, and me in Van 2. That equals a CRAZY VAN, which means: loud, a little racey at times, but a whole lot of fun!!! So beware before you ask someone. Can't wait to see you guys!
I don't know about anyone else but I am a little frustrated. Here it is almost time for the race and my kids have been sick, I have been sick, and now there is 6 inches of snow outside. Such a pain. It is hard enough for me to find time to run with all my lilttle monkey running around. O'well I know stop complaining and just get it done

Tuesday, January 12, 2010

Okay team. How is your training? Let's see mine oh yeah IT SUCKS!!!!! So I try to run at the JCC that is next to the hospital, which is actually so nice because they let you use the facility for free if your kids are in the hospital. It is great except sometimes your kids are not always in a state that you can leave them. I am so excited for all of you. It makes me so sad when I see the pictures from the last races that I was there with you all. I am going to be thinking of you all during your race. Please keep me updated with texts. Oh and Erika thanks for the card it was very nice of you. Have lots of fun for me. It isn't hard to have fun with that group though. Good luck to all of you.

Thursday, January 7, 2010

SERIOUSLY!!!

I went running for the first time since I had my baby. This picture says it all. 6 weeks till the race that is awesome. OH HELP!!!

Wednesday, January 6, 2010

DRIVERS?

Do we need to organize drivers? Didn't know what the plan is for that. I can still see if my Mom will be up for it if needed.

Tuesday, January 5, 2010

Sorry!!!

Sorry! I have been neglecting my Capt duties. I won't make excuses though... I will just be better. I have talked to someone about shirts. We are ordering a pink and purple. they are my nieces favorite colors. Van1 will ware there purple shirts there first run and pink for there last run. Van 2 will do the opposite, then when we get pictures at the end we will have half in pink and half in purple. They will say Mom's Found Therapy Runs For Dez on the front and then have sponsors on the back. i think all of you know by now, but our sweet niece (Nikki's daughter) has just been diagnosed with AML Leukemia...Yes on top of her Crohn's disease. We really want to Race for her. It means alot to her when we run for her. If anyone has a hard time training, just think of my niece. If she can go through all she's going through with a sweet smile on her face, the least we can do is RUN. I know it keeps me going even when I want to wimp out, because I would rather be outside then the treadmill. So if you need a little motivation think of her. Lets try to bring home a bat ton for her. Also I need Shirts sizes by the end of the week. If I don't get your size I will order what you wrote down when you registered. I have not got a starting time yet, but when I do I will let you know and we'll start making plans. I will also be posting my packing list that you can use if you like. Can't wait to see you all!!!

Steph, If you want to stay in Phoenix Thursday night I think Chris and I will be staying there with some friends. I know Chris would love to see you guys.

New kid on the Block

So I am needing to make travel arrangements and am wondering if any of you can give me the low down. When do we get our start time? I hear that some stay in a hotel in Prescott on thursday night, does this apply to Van 2 also? Do we make assignments for food, water, etc, or do we bring our own? What is the weather generally?
Hope that everyone's training is going well!!!
